Planning to visit the George M. Holmes Convocation Center? Here are some parking tips.

Sixty-five spaces are available at the convocation center. An additional 220 spaces are available within a five-minute walk at the Hill Street lot, located between the center and John Thomas Hall.

Visitors also may park in other parts of campus traditionally used for evening or weekend events, such as the lots next to Raley Hall, Edwin Duncan Hall, B.B. Dougherty Administration Building, Founders Hall and University Drive, as well as on-street parking along River Street.

Dr. Clyde Robbins, director of design and construction at Appalachian State University, says especially large events at the convocation center probably will require the public transportation system AppalCART to shuttle spectators.

Construction of a $10.7 million parking deck began in late July. Located next to Kerr Scott Hall, it will hold 750 cars and house the university’s police and parking operations. Completion is expected in December 2001.

Long-range plans call for two more parking decks, each accommodating 400 to 500 cars. Possible locations will be at the convocation center and Legend’s, the university’s nightclub on Hardin Street.
